The Discovery of Penicillin

In 1928, Dr. Alexander Fleming, a scientist from Scotland, was studying bacteria in his laboratory. He noticed something unusual: one of his culture plates had developed mold. To his surprise, the mold stopped the growth of harmful bacteria around it.

Dr. Fleming discovered that the mold, called Penicillium notatum, released a substance that killed bacteria. This discovery led to the development of penicillin, the first true antibiotic. During World War II, penicillin saved the lives of many soldiers who suffered from infected wounds.

Today, penicillin and other antibiotics continue to save millions of lives around the world.

The Mysterious Bamboo Grove

In a quiet town in the Philippines, there was a bamboo grove that children loved to visit. One day, Ana and her friends went there to play hide-and-seek. As Ana hid behind the tall bamboo, she noticed something unusual—one of the bamboo stalks had a glowing crack.

Curious, Ana touched it. Suddenly, the bamboo opened, revealing a small hollow inside with a tiny book made of banana leaves. The book told stories about the town’s ancestors—how they planted rice, cared for the river, and respected nature.

Ana and her friends decided to show the book to their teacher, who encouraged them to share the lessons with others. From then on, the bamboo grove became not just a playground, but a place where children learned to treasure their heritage.

Story A – The First Moon Landing (Factual)

In the 1960s, the United States and the Soviet Union were competing in what was called the “Space Race.” Each nation wanted to show its strength in science and technology. On July 16, 1969, the United States launched Apollo 11, a spacecraft carrying astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins.

After four days of travel, the spacecraft reached the moon. On July 20, millions of people around the world watched on television as Neil Armstrong stepped down onto the moon’s surface. His words, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind,” became famous. Soon after, Buzz Aldrin joined him while Michael Collins stayed in orbit.

The astronauts collected moon rocks, placed scientific instruments, and took photographs of the lunar surface. They also planted the American flag. After spending about 21 hours on the moon, they returned to their spacecraft and traveled safely back to Earth.

The Apollo 11 mission proved that human beings could not only travel beyond Earth but also set foot on another world. It remains one of the most important milestones in human history.

Story B – The Eruption of Mount Pinatubo (Factual)

In June 1991, Mount Pinatubo in Luzon, Philippines, erupted after being quiet for more than 600 years. Scientists had noticed signs weeks earlier—earthquakes, rising smoke, and small explosions. They warned people living nearby to evacuate, but many were hesitant at first.

On June 15, the eruption began. Ash, smoke, and gas shot more than 30 kilometers into the sky. The explosion was so strong that it turned day into night in nearby provinces. Roofs collapsed under the weight of volcanic ash, and rivers overflowed because of heavy rains mixed with ash.

Thousands of families had to flee to evacuation centers. Although many homes and farms were destroyed, the early warnings saved countless lives. Scientists later described the eruption as one of the most powerful in the 20th century.

Mount Pinatubo’s eruption taught Filipinos and the world the importance of disaster preparedness. It also reminded everyone that nature is powerful and must be respected.

Story C – The Secret Garden Bench (Fiction)

Marco loved spending weekends at his grandmother’s house. Her backyard garden was filled with colorful flowers, fruit trees, and butterflies. One afternoon, while chasing a butterfly, Marco stumbled upon an old stone bench hidden behind thick vines. Curious, he started clearing the plants away.

To his surprise, the bench was covered with carvings of birds, stars, and waves. On the backrest, he found a line of words written in Baybayin, an ancient Filipino script. Marco ran to his grandmother, who explained that the bench had been built by his great-grandfather, a teacher who loved sharing riddles and poems with children.

Excited, Marco traced the carvings and read the riddles aloud. His cousins gathered around, laughing and trying to solve them. The bench soon became their favorite spot in the garden, where they played, read stories, and even wrote their own poems.

From then on, Marco realized that hidden treasures are not always made of gold or jewels. Sometimes, they are the memories and stories left behind by those who came before us.
